The Guaranteed Way to Learn New Software

What my eye doctor taught me about training

I finally graduated to bifocals. Age, screen time, or both. Either way, one pair of glasses now handles near and far.

Why bring that up in an article about learning Salesforce? Because your biology shapes how you learn new software. Understand it, and you can use a simple method to learn faster. I call it R.T.S.

R.T.S. stands for Read The Screen. Read it like a book. One line at a time, left to right, top to bottom.

That sounds obvious. It is not. I have taught thousands of people to use new software, and reading the screen like a book is not the natural tendency of the human eye.

Your eyes want to scan, not read

Your eye has a small focal point. Left on its own, that focal point zips around the screen like a fly in a room, grabbing bits of information at random and dumping them into your brain with no order.

That scanning is unconscious. You do not choose it. And if you do not catch yourself doing it, it will spike your stress. Your brain is trying to make sense of fragments instead of a sequence.

Reading gives your brain a system it already trusts

You spent years learning to read books in order. That skill is still in there. R.T.S. puts it back to work. When you read the screen like a book, you give your conscious brain time to process new information, using the same controlled scan you already trust from reading.

Slow down to speed up

If you want to get fast at learning Salesforce, you have to slow down first. Read The Screen. Every time.

Bonus tip: breathe

When you feel the tension build and your eyes want to slip back into random scanning, stop. Breathe. Tell yourself: slow down and read.

Do that, and you will learn the software. And you will get faster.
